YOUTH COUNSELING
BE SEX SMART - WORKSHOP FOR YOUTH AGES 14-24
The LGBT Community Center offers young people ages 14-24 a comprehensive sexual health program called Be Sex Smart that addresses HIV prevention and overall wellness.
Based on a series of workshops created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this intervention provides young people with a confidential, small group environment where they can ask questions and openly discuss matters of concern.
Program activity centers on self-esteem, HIV/STD/STI prevention, healthy relationship building, assertiveness, coping skills and problem solving. The sessions are as follows, and their success depends on the youth participants:
Session 1: Learning the Language of HIV and other STD/STIs
Session 2: Assessing Personalized Risk
Session 3: Learning How to Use Condoms
Session 4: Effects of Drugs and Alcohol
Session 5: Recognizing and Coping with Feelings
Session 6: Negotiating Effectively
Session 7: Self-Talk - Switching Negative Thoughts to Positive Thoughts
Session 8: Practicing Safer Sex
Session 9: Individualized Counseling
Session 10: Visit to a Community Health Resource
