The Pride Scholarship
Thanks to a gracious donor, The LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland is able to provide an opportunity for LGBTQA+ students to further their dreams.
Financing higher education can often be a challenge for LGBTQ+ youth, especially when families are not supportive. According to The 2013 National School Climate Survey conducted by the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), LGBT students who experienced discrimination are more than three times more likely to have missed school than those who did not. Additionally, LGBT students who experienced LGBT-related victimization are more than twice as likely to report not pursuing post-secondary plans? But there's ways that we can help.
About the Scholarship
The Pride Scholarship will be awarded annually to one (1) eligible applicant between the age of 17-25, who is a resident of Ohio, and is seeking scholarship money to any university, community college, technical school, art school, or para-professional program. While only 1 recipient is awarded each year, applicants may apply annually as long as they are eligible for consideration. Any eligible candidate with a relationship to the LGBTQ+ community is invited to apply; this means LGBTQ-identified, ally, or family and/or friend of LGBTQ-individuals. There are no restrictions on what type of post-secondary education this student is pursuing. It can be a university, technical school, art school, para-professional training, or community college.
The Pride Scholarship is no longer accepting applications for 2016.
Criteria for Consideration
Recipients will be chosen based upon the entirety of their application packet. Though we do ask for the applicant to submit their GPA and list of strengths, the LGBT Pride Scholarship is not purely an academic scholarship. Rather, the committee is tasked with awarding this scholarship to the applicant who best demonstrates how their goals, personal character, and achievements will support them in making a positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community and society in general.
