Chad Griffin, New National HRC President Visited the Center August 25
Saturday, August 25, 2012, 11:00 – 1:00PM. Chad Griffin, the new president of the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization – visited The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Greater Cleveland
The visit raised awareness of issues facing LGBT youth in Ohio and across the country. HRC recently released a new groundbreaking study of LGBT youth and their straight counterparts. Survey results can be viewed at www.hrc.org/youth.
Please join us to learn we are doing at the Center to support LGBTQ youth and to hear their voices about some of the challenges they face growing up LBGTQ in Cleveland. (Read more about Chad griffin)
YOUTH SURVEY Griffin’s motivation for leading HRC is to make the world better for LGBT youth that are at a disadvantage compared to their peers. Earlier this summer, he unveiled a startling new survey conducted by HRC on the harsh realities facing LGBT youth.
Among the survey’s findings:
Nationally, LGBT youth more than three times more likely to be verbally bullied. In Ohio, over half of LGBT youth report that they’ve been harassed with anti-gay slurs.
One in five LGBT teens in Ohio say they have been physically assaulted at school.
59 percent of straight youth feel accepted by their community; this number drops to 49 percent among LGBT young people.
LGBT youth are twice as likely to experiment with alcohol or drugs and a strikingly high number are homeless, in foster care, or living in high-risk situations.
