The Center’s PrEP Outreach Program is a partnership with MetroHealth Medical Center to increase provider capacity and community knowledge of HIV prevention strategies in Northeast Ohio. The program is funded through Gilead, a biopharmaceutical company and the producer of PrEP, the once-a-day pill that will prevent people at risk from getting HIV. Through this program, the Center will provide outreach to communities most vulnerable to HIV infection, education on HIV and prevention methods, and referrals to competent providers in the area, such as MetroHealth.
To facilitate this work, Belle will be working with 5 Public Opinion Leaders (POLs), who have access and influence over populations at high risk for HIV infection. MetroHealth will train these POLs to be experts on HIV prevention and PrEP, as well as HIV care and prevention resources in the region. The POLs then enter the community and distribute materials, have 1-on-1 conversations with people at risk for HIV, and provide linkages to care for individuals to get on PrEP. The program will also facilitate 6 community dinners to spread the word about PrEP, and 4 PrEP Workshops here at the Center for people who want to learn more about how they can protect themselves.
