This survey is part of our initiative to become a SAGENET Affiliate, a program administered by SAGE-USA. SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, and provides training for aging providers and LGBT organizations through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging.

SAGENet comprises 23 affiliates located in 16 states around the country. Affiliates provide services and programs to LGBT older people in their local communities. They also work on city and state advocacy to ensure that public policies better support the needs of LGBT elders.

Despite advances in LGBT civil rights, many older adult care providers never stop to consider that their older clients may be lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) - and even those who do may not know how to provide services in culturally-sensitive ways. As a result, LGBT older adults often avoid seeking needed services out of fear of discrimination.

• One study indicated that LGBT older adults may be as much as five times less likely to access needed health and social services because of their fear of discrimination from the very people who should be helping them.
• LGBT older adults are twice as likely to live alone than heterosexual older adults, more than four times as likely to have no children, and the informal caregiving support we assume is in place for older adults may not be there for LGBT elders.

The LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland has launched a survey to assess the health and human service needs of LGBT people in the Greater Cleveland area.

The survey includes questions on your health care access, social and mental health, use of LGBT-specific services, the health of your loved ones, any recent experiences of discrimination, any legal protections you may have in place, and basic demographic information.

The survey is anonymous and open to LGBT folks who are 18 and older in Ohio.
